Port Wine
60Douro Region
The Oldest Demarked Wine Region
Vinho do Porto is a Portuguese generous wine from the northern part of the country. It is usually a very rich wine, also produced in a dry and very dry types. It is sometime marketed as an after dinner wine. The Douro Region was recognized and established as a demarcated region by the Marques do Pombal ,creating what is still known today as The Real Companhia Velha (The Royal Port Company)making it the first demarcated wine region in the world.
The wine is made from grape types known and grown in the Douro region. Touriga Nacional,Tinta Roriz,Touriga Franca,Tinta Barroca are just a few varities. It is then cellared and let to age,in the warehouses of Vila Nova de Gaia, before being bottled and labeled. Wine is then produced and then with the brandy is added in order to stop the fermenting process, exerting a sugar in the wine, to boost the alcohol by volume. The wine got its name from the city of OPorto at the begining of the Douro River, where it is still shipped from today.

I like a good Port after a holiday dinner but not the 'dry' ones.
What type of brandy is used? Is the brandy also produced in the Douro region?
